TAROT: REVERSALS

Tarot reversals, let's talk about 'em. Do you read reversals in your spreads? Or in spreads for others? Why and why not? Many people chose to ignore reversals as they do not like the negative meanings associated with them in most books. However, many readers also find that reading reversed cards adds depth, nuance, tone, and subordinate ideas to the upright meaning.

A reversed card sometimes carries similar meanings to the upright meaning of the *preceding* card in the deck. The energy cannot fully manifest due to past attachments of the previous card. Some readers might suggest Going back and revisiting that card to see its lessons or experiences. Thus, a reversal can "throw you back" or "revert you" to the naturally proceeding card.

A reversal as "yin" or passive manifestation of the cards upright meaning which could be "yang" or active. Notice the shape of the background and ask what possibilities move forward from the background when turned upright. What is left of you were to cut the active (upright) energies out of the picture? This approach looks at subtle consequences that result from neglect of normal roles or activities. Similarly, reversals can point to spirit messages. Indicating the influence of or messages from "mirror reflections" or shadow, or parallel worlds.

Determining what system and which reversed meanings to use will always be up to you. Reading the tarot is so much more than just memorizing definitions. It is intuition, feeling, and also looking to the other cards in the spread to see common themes, symbols, patterns or actions that support a particular situation.

Remember,  tarot readings are about becoming aware of what you are creating with your current attitudes and choices. While some situations are more difficult to change than others, every decision made and every action taken is an opportunity to create a new future.
