The Astrology of America’s 250th Anniversary: A Nation at a Crossroads

Written By Lisa Stardust & Bri Luna

On July 4, 2026, the United States reaches an extraordinary milestone: 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While fireworks, flags, and celebrations will dominate the day, astrology invites us to pause and ask a more profound question:

What does freedom actually mean 250 years later?

For many Americans, Independence Day represents liberty and democracy. For others, it is a reminder that the promises made in 1776 were never extended equally to everyone. As a Black and Indigenous Mexican woman, I cannot separate this anniversary from the histories my own ancestors lived through. Some were displaced from their lands. Others survived slavery and generations of systemic oppression. Their stories are just as much a part of America’s history as the Declaration itself.

As witches, we understand something history books often overlook: the land remembers, our ancestors remember.

Astrology reminds us that nations, like people, move through cycles of growth, reckoning, collapse, and renewal. The celestial alignments surrounding America’s 250th anniversary suggest the country is entering one of its most significant periods of transformation in generations.

Saturn and Neptune in Aries: The End of an Era

One of the defining astrological signatures of this period is the conjunction between Saturn and Neptune in Aries.

In mundane astrology, the branch of astrology that studies world events and nations. Saturn represents governments, institutions, laws, authority, and the systems that create order. Neptune symbolizes collective ideals, spirituality, illusion, compassion, and the gradual dissolution of structures that no longer serve humanity.

When these two planets unite, they often coincide with periods when societies begin questioning the institutions they once believed were permanent.

The last Saturn-Neptune conjunction occurred in 1989, the year the Berlin Wall fell. Across the globe, governments shifted, ideologies changed, and entire political systems were reimagined. History never repeats itself exactly, but astrology reminds us that similar planetary cycles often bring similar themes.

This conjunction is occurring in Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. Aries represents action, courage, conflict, and new beginnings. Rather than preserving outdated structures, Aries pushes us to confront what is broken and begin again.

As Neptune also returns to the same sign it occupied during the Civil War era, conversations surrounding freedom, immigration, civil rights, and national identity are once again rising to the surface. Debates surrounding ICE, borders, voting rights, and human dignity are not isolated events—they reflect deeper questions about what America believes freedom should look like in the twenty-first century.

America’s Uranus Return: A Rare Cycle of Revolution

Perhaps the most important transit shaping the nation’s future is the United States’ Uranus Return.

Uranus takes approximately eighty-four years to orbit the Sun. That means a Uranus Return only happens once every eighty-four years, making it one of the rarest and most transformative cycles a nation can experience.

In astrology, Uranus is known as the Great Awakener. It governs revolution, rebellion, innovation, liberation, technological breakthroughs, and radical social change. Uranus does not ask permission. It disrupts complacency and forces evolution.

The current Uranus Return began in 2025 before briefly retrograding back into Taurus. In 2026, Uranus officially re-entered Gemini, where it will remain active through 2033, with its most significant phase arriving in 2027.

Historically, Uranian periods coincide with dramatic shifts in collective consciousness. Grassroots movements gain momentum. Institutions face unprecedented scrutiny. Younger generations challenge long-standing traditions. New technologies reshape communication, activism, and power itself.

This does not automatically mean revolution unfolds in one dramatic event. Rather, it suggests the beginning of a much longer process of reinvention.

Mars Meets Uranus: The Power of Collective Voices

This Fourth of July, Mars forms a conjunction with Uranus in Gemini, adding another layer of intensity to the national atmosphere.

Mars governs action, courage, conflict, and the willingness to fight for what matters. Uranus represents disruption and liberation. Gemini rules communication, media, journalism, education, and the exchange of ideas.

Together, these planets create an atmosphere where words become powerful catalysts for change.

Protests, grassroots organizing, investigative journalism, public discourse, and collective action all fall under Gemini’s domain. This alignment reminds us that revolutions are not only fought in the streets—they begin with conversations, education, storytelling, and the refusal to remain silent.

Barbault’s Basket: A Rare Collective Turning Point

Between July 19 and July 21, astrologers will also be watching a rare planetary formation known as Barbault’s Basket.

This occurs when several outer planets occupy the same degrees, creating a distinctive geometric pattern associated with collective turning points and shifts in global consciousness.

Jupiter in Leo encourages bold leadership and creative expression.

Uranus in Gemini accelerates innovation and revolution.

Neptune retrograde in Aries dissolves outdated identities and challenges existing ideologies.

Pluto retrograde in Aquarius continues exposing systems of inequality while demanding collective transformation.

Taken together, these planetary forces suggest society is moving through a period where old structures can no longer sustain themselves without meaningful change.

The North Node in Aquarius: A New Collective Destiny

On July 26, the North Node enters Aquarius, opposing the United States’ natal North Node in Leo.

The lunar nodes represent our collective karmic direction. The South Node reflects inherited patterns and familiar behaviors, while the North Node points toward growth and evolution.

Aquarius asks us to think beyond individual power and embrace community, innovation, equity, and collective responsibility.

This nodal opposition challenges America to reconsider who benefits from existing systems—and who has historically been left behind.

It asks whether patriotism means protecting tradition at all costs or having the courage to improve the nation for future generations.

What Does Independence Mean Now?

America’s 250th anniversary arrives under one of the most extraordinary astrological landscapes in modern history. As witches, we understand that healing begins with remembrance.

We honor the original stewards of this land.

We honor the ancestors whose labor built this nation.

We honor those whose histories were erased, rewritten, or deliberately forgotten.

True magic has never been about avoiding uncomfortable truths. It has always been about transformation.

The astrology of this moment reminds us that no nation is exempt from the natural cycles of death and rebirth. Everything that is built must eventually evolve. Everything buried eventually rises to the surface. Every generation inherits the responsibility of deciding what comes next.

Two hundred and fifty years later, perhaps the greatest act of patriotism is not pretending that America has fulfilled its promise of freedom, but committing ourselves to ensuring that one day, it finally does.

The next chapter of this nation’s story is already being written. The stars remind us that transformation is inevitable. What remains uncertain is whether we will have the courage to meet this moment with honesty, accountability, and a vision for a more just future.
